At Toyota, we believe that all our drivers deserve a safe driving experience. That’s why we’ve developed the Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) suite, which comes standard on the majority of our Toyota models. This suite of advanced active safety technologies and driving aids helps enhance driver awareness and improve vehicle handling.
The integrated TSS system enhances road safety in three key areas: preventing certain types of frontal collisions and mitigating their consequences, maintaining the vehicle within its lane, and improving safety for nighttime driving. Road safety starts with accident prevention!
The TSS-P integrates advanced technologies such as the pre-collision system, lane departure alert, dynamic radar cruise control, and automatic high beams.
The TSS 2.0, an evolution of the TSS-P, incorporates up to six active safety and driver assistance technologies.
The TSS 2.5 and TSS 2.5+ bring new features to the pre-collision system and radar-based dynamic cruise control, while enhancing the lane departure alert system and lane tracing assist.
The TSS 3.0 introduces new advancements, such as motorcycle detection, proactive driving assistance, and sign recognition. It represents Toyota’s most advanced evolved suite of active safety technology to date.
Automatic high beams are included in all versions of TSS. This system reacts to oncoming vehicle headlights or taillights of vehicles ahead of you, automatically adjusting between low and high beams according to the situation.
The lane departure alert system warns you when you begin to leave your lane and detects the yellow or white lane markings on the road. On some models equipped with TSS-P, this alert may also include a steering assistance function, capable of applying slight corrections to the steering wheel.
Designed specifically for highway use, radar-based dynamic cruise control can automatically adjust your vehicle’s speed to maintain a predefined distance from the vehicle in front of you. This system operates within a speed range of approximately 40 to 180 km/h. On some Toyota models, the system can also perform vehicle-to-vehicle distance control down to a minimum speed of 0 km/h and resume operation after a stop.
The pre-collision system provides assistance to avoid collisions or mitigate their consequences in situations where a frontal collision is likely to occur. In some cases, the system can also assist the driver by automatically applying the brakes. The pre-collision system can also help detect pedestrians in certain situations.
In vehicles equipped with lane-keeping assist, this system works alongside radar-based dynamic cruise control to keep the vehicle centered in its lane when lane markings are visible on the road, thus preventing unintended deviations. Models equipped with TSS 3.0 now offer additional features such as lane tracing assist and emergency stop assist. The latter can bring the vehicle to a stop in certain conditions where the driver is inattentive and does not respond to warnings to regain control of the vehicle.
Excellence Rooted in Quality
The quality, durability, and reliability of Toyota vehicles are legendary, ensuring you many years of enjoyment and safety on the road.
Rigorous Crash Testing
To ensure optimal safety, over 600 Toyota vehicles undergo crash testing each year. By placing sensors on prototype vehicles, we can examine the effects of impacts after each collision. This allows us to develop improvements to vehicle design. Through repeated testing, we strive to create safe vehicles for all types of collisions.
Triple Verification
To ensure the safety of our vehicles, we leave nothing to chance: components undergo triple verification instead of just one. Take, for example, our airbags. The electronic connections of the system are protected by gold-plated terminals to prevent corrosion and are inspected three times during the production line at Toyota factories before being installed in a vehicle.
